" It is a happy talent to know how to play "
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Children learn best through movement, action and play.
For Blooming yogis, classes doesn't start with yoga poses and end with yoga poses like an adult yoga class.
There's a lot of fun ,games and yoga challenges in between .
For example, just like in an adult class we have animal names for the poses ( cat pose, cow pose, down ward dog ) but we also learn many other names for yoga poses such as shark pose, snake pose, spider pose, fairy pose, unicorn pose, dragon pose and lots more. We learn to walk like a bear, swing like a monkey or crawl like a spider , gallop like a unicorn and fly like a fairy.
"By doing a few breathing exercises at the start of any class, children will become aware of the power of their breath, and they will begin to think of using it outside of Yoga" -
Sara J Weis (Best selling author for kids yoga, Kids Yoga instructor and classroom teacher of 20 years).
We learn about different ways to breath such as, bunny breath, snake breath or lion's breath and birthday breathing (imagination comes into play).
We learn to breath deep and breath out slow
( This will help us to be calm, focus and relax).
We play Yoga games such as Down dog tunnels ( where we make a line with down dog Yoga pose and each of us gets a chance to go through this tunnel ), freeze game with music
( we strike a Yoga pose when the music stops).
We have Yoga challenges poses for 2 or a group such as Double down dog, making a raindrop
( 2 person), Happy Yoga circle ( a group game, we hold hands in a circle and we slowly lean back and support one another. We learn about working as a group.
We also read books to the children and incorporate poses from the books we read. For example- books about nature; we listened to the sound we hear around us. We talk about what types of animals or insects that make sound, (crickets and geckos) and we think about how gecko pose will look like, we can make up our own pose ( imagination at play), or we talk about the elements; for example, wind element - we play games by practicing our tree pose while our friends become the wind .
Classes will be theme base. Example, such as -Yoga Bugs. We may ask the kids how many bugs can they think of ? We do activities such as bug walk across the room, sliding snail, fly like a lady bug or march like an ant. We practice butterfly pose, dead bug pose and locust pose.
There is fun and games in a kids yoga class with Blooming Yogis. Children learn how to strengthen and build a strong body through yoga poses and much more!
Everything that children learn through yoga poses, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques builds self awareness and are skills they can use in their day-to-day lives.
* Yoga is a life long practice and we introduce Yoga as a practice with breath and mindfulness that the children will slowly incorporate into their lives as they get further down the road to adulthood.
